- 4 tablespoons salted butter, softened, divided
- 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 2 ounces shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 4 slices white bread, lightly toasted
- 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
- 2 thin slices Black Forest ham
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 teaspoon chopped fresh dill, or to taste (Optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Bechamel Sauce: In a saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Slowly whisk in milk until smooth. Cook until thickened, then stir in Gruyère cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
- Assemble Sandwich: Spread each toast slice with Dijon mustard. Top 2 slices with ham, then spoon over some bechamel sauce. Place remaining slices on top.
- Cook Eggs: In a skillet, melt remaining butter. Fry eggs to desired doneness. Top each sandwich with a fried egg.
- Serve: Optionally sprinkle with fresh dill before serving.
Notes
- You can customize the fillings by adding different types of cheese or using bacon instead of ham.
- For a vegetarian version, omit the ham and add sautéed mushrooms or spinach.
