Description

Croque Madame is a classic French sandwich made with ham, cheese, and creamy bechamel sauce, topped with a fried egg. It’s a delicious and indulgent dish perfect for brunch or a special breakfast.

Ingredients

Units Scale

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, softened, divided
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 ounces shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 slices white bread, lightly toasted
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 thin slices Black Forest ham
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh dill, or to taste (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Bechamel Sauce: In a saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Slowly whisk in milk until smooth. Cook until thickened, then stir in Gruyère cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  2. Assemble Sandwich: Spread each toast slice with Dijon mustard. Top 2 slices with ham, then spoon over some bechamel sauce. Place remaining slices on top.
  3. Cook Eggs: In a skillet, melt remaining butter. Fry eggs to desired doneness. Top each sandwich with a fried egg.
  4. Serve: Optionally sprinkle with fresh dill before serving.

Notes

  • You can customize the fillings by adding different types of cheese or using bacon instead of ham.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit the ham and add sautéed mushrooms or spinach.
