Description

This Sweet and Sour Chicken recipe combines tender chunks of chicken with a tangy and sweet sauce, served with colorful bell peppers and pineapples. It’s a classic takeout favorite made right at home!

Ingredients

Scale

For the sweet and sour sauce:

  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar

For the chicken:

  • 12 ounces boneless skinless chicken breast or thighs
  • 12 tablespoons water
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/8 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the batter:

  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2/3 cup ice water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For the rest of the dish:

  • 2/3 cup canned pineapple chunks
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1/4 cup red onion
  • 1/4 cup red bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup green bell pepper
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sweet and sour sauce: Combine hot water, salt, sugar, ketchup, pineapple juice, and rice wine vinegar in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. Marinate the chicken: Cut chicken into chunks, then mix with water, garlic powder, onion powder, sesame oil, white pepper, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Make the batter: Combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, ice water, and vegetable oil. Dip chicken in batter and fry until golden brown.
  4. Sauté the vegetables: In a pan, sauté red onion, red bell pepper, and green bell pepper. Add pineapple chunks.
  5. Combine everything: Pour sweet and sour sauce over the chicken and vegetables. Thicken with cornstarch and water mixture. Serve hot.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sweetness or sourness of the sauce to your liking by tweaking the sugar and vinegar ratios.
  • Feel free to add more vegetables like carrots or snow peas for extra crunch and color.
